Fall Guys is back with a new season Material Next Wednesday, May 10, but this time there’s a big new addition, developer Mediatonic just unveiled Build-It-Yourself Creative Mode, giving players the tools to create and share their own levels.
Creative Mode works much as you’d expect, with an intuitive, fully featured creation toolkit available directly in-game. Mediatonic demoed the new mode in today’s reveal livestream, explaining that, at launch, players will be able to build race levels using original or new digital themes from Fall Guys — including additional themes, round types, In future updates with set to add obstacles and music.
After budding stage makers select their round type and theme, Creative Mode then takes them to a new building view, where they can call up a list of available items grouped by category, including obstacles, decorations, and more.
Looks like a fairly robust set of tools for actual object placement, including rotation, snapping and even a multi-selection tool, enabling builders to paste groups of objects elsewhere . Mediatonic says that “most” items include adjustable properties – so you can change the color of an item, change the number of doors, choose the direction of a conveyor belt, with the major restriction coming from a “budget” building. are and so on. Essentially, it puts a limit on how much you can put in a level, with different items having different “costs”.
Furthermore, the only stipulations when building levels are that they have a start, end, and checkpoints—as indicated by the onscreen building checklist—and must be possible to complete. Mediatonic says that the Creative Mode, coming next week, is what the studio is now using to create official levels, with good results. As such, Fall Guys Season 4 — subtitled Creative Construction — will introduce 50 new in-house rounds throughout the season, which the developers call “way more than we’ve ever managed before,” and it will be in addition to one of the best Weekly curated list of player-designed stages. Whether or not the cash-strapped Epic Games, which is likely to acquire Mediatonic in 2021, will pay creators for any major feature work mentioned during today’s stream remains unclear.
Along with Creative Mode, Season 4 brings a new “digital” theme, giving the season a vaporwave-inspired aesthetic, and it will add the new Boom Blaster barrier, a sort of lily pad/punch glove hybrid. Elsewhere, there’s a fresh lick of paint for the Fall Guys’ show selector, changes to body blocking to make it “more fluid and satisfying” with other players, and some “big changes” to the overall delivery format as well.
For example, Season 4 will have a slightly longer season, and Mediatonic is ditching the Fall Guys’ existing Season Pass model in favor of a shorter, more frequent Fame Pass. These will each cost 600 Show Bucks more than the Season Pass, but the studio hasn’t yet indicated how often these will be refreshed, so it’s unclear whether the Fame Pass model will cost more in a season than the current one. Or whether it will prove to be less expensive or not. establish.
Mediatonic ended its livestream with a few teases of new features currently in development (which may or may not eventually make it to the live game), including a new co-op-focused tethered mode, which Connects players at the hip with a stretch.
