It seems like barely yesterday that developer Rusty Lake was impressing us with his brilliantly inventive cooperative puzzler The Past Within, but now the studio is back to announce its next adventure, Underground Blossom, coming later this year. came back.
To date, Rusty Lake has released 16 games under the Rusty Lake and Cube Escape banner – some completely premium offerings, others free-to-play companion pieces – casual point-and-click puzzles and room-escape-style puzzles. A stunningly sinister, narratively-entwined saga portraying the lives of the Vanderboom family.
As with developer Rusty Lake’s previous titles, the newly announced Underground Blossom has dropped the Rusty Lake moniker, but is still very much set in its own vast universe, this time taking players through the life and memories of Laura in Rusty Lake Underground. Taking you on a journey through the system. Vanderboom – First introduce all the way back to Cube Escape: Seasons.
“Travel from station to station, each subway symbolizing a piece of Laura’s past and future,” explains developer Rusty Lake. “Solve various puzzles, find the right subway to board and uncover one of Laura’s timelines, all the while helping her understand her life and escape the corruption of her mind!”.
There’s no release date for Underground Blossom right now, but it’s coming to Steam and mobile later this year — plus there’s a demo right now. And if you haven’t experienced the Rusty Lake and the Cube Escape saga yet, now is the perfect time to get caught up in it. As the series celebrates its eighth anniversary this week, the entire collection is currently discounted on Steam.
The nine-game Cube Escape collection can be bought for £1.99, while the more substantial Rusty Lake games range from 79p for last year’s excellent – and Eurogamer recommended – The Past Within to £2.99. Ordinarily, I’d recommend the beautiful, surprisingly moving Rusty Lake: Roots as a good starting point, but at their current bargain price point, speaking as a huge fan, it’s hard to recommend just them all. Do not recommend to buy.
