Point-and-click puzzle game The Case of the Golden Idol will be getting a new expansion next month.
On May 4, players will be able to delve into the game’s The Spiders of Lanka expansion to find out exactly what’s going on in three new scenarios. This expansion will take place in a completely new environment. So new, in fact, that it’s all happening “thousands of miles from the rain-soaked hills of Blackfield”.
The Spider of Lanka begins a year before the first scenario of The Case of the Golden Idol, and follows the story of Albert Cloudslee and Oberon Gellar as they make their first voyage to the Kingdom of Lanka. They’ll be here… Actually, I can’t tell you that. In the true spirit of The Case of the Golden Idol, that information has been edited out. I can share this trailer with you, so please sit back and enjoy.
A press release for the expansion reads, “Draw deep into complex personalities and conflicting motives as you scour the courtyards, throne rooms, docks and back alleys for clues behind a grim mystery.”
Upon its release, The Spiders of Lanka will cost $5.99 (sorry, I was not given UK pricing). Please note, the base game is required to access the DLC.
With that in mind, if you haven’t played The Case of the Golden Idol yet, but are a fellow puzzle game fan, I would totally encourage you to give it a try. The demo is still up on Steam if you’re interested.
Eurogamer gave The Case of the Golden Idol a recommended badge upon its release last year, with Alexis Ong calling it an “excellent period murder-mystery”.
“For me, Golden Idol’s greatest triumph is the concise writing—it’s a story told with complete confidence in the player’s ability to make deductions, which takes it from a basic murder-mystery game to a singular piece of narrative art, he wrote in his review.
